Taking the necessary precautions on and around campus

How safe do you feel?

According to University Police Department, there was a shooting on San Salvador on Halloween night at 1:30 a.m.

“This is a campus advisory. Shortly after one-thirty AM this morning, an unidentified adult male was shot and wounded at the intersection of San Salvador and 7th Street.

“The suspect did not flee onto campus grounds. A handgun was recovered at the scene. The victim was removed to the hospital for treatment and there is no further information regarding the victim. There is an active investigation in progress,” An audio message from the campus alert system said.

The victim was hospitalized and will survive.

The shooter was not found in a search that must have lasted at least three hours in the greater SJSU area.

What is the record of violence near SJSU?

People are arrested for such things as vandalism and public drunkenness.

The most frequent crime seems to be possession of marijuana.

There were 74 drug arrests in 2008, and nine sex offenses and 30 burglaries, according to UPD statistics.

SJSU is a community of commuters — thus, not as aware of social situations like gangs.

I would advise not to wear red or blue, so you’re not mistaken in a turf war.

Other obvious precautions include not walking alone, being aware of your surroundings and walking in pairs.

The ante is going up, Society is becoming needier, and guns are always everywhere because we love our freedom.

“Currently, there is no danger to the campus community. Repeat, there is no current danger to the campus community,” said the campus alert system.

This will have to be repeated more than twice to get the bug out of my head that there is no danger on or off campus.

Whatever happened on Halloween night impinges our collective safety.

Next time you see the UPD, thank them, because they are our security.
